Content addition date : 03-12-2024
The update to the Chemical Classification, Labelling and Packaging (CLP) Regulation was published on 20 November 2024 under Regulation (EU) 2024/2865. The update includes significant changes to the rules for the classification and labelling of chemicals. The transition will be phased in over the next two years to allow suppliers to adapt to the new requirements. Some of the key points in the updated regulation are highlighted follows:
Labelling
It covers changes to labels, including font size, line spacing, text colour. These new rules will come into effect on January 1, 2027. However, there are many other changes to the new labelling rules that will come into effect on July 1, 2026. These include new rules that set deadlines for updating labels if classification or labelling information changes, the use of foldable labels, exceptional provisions for labels that do not exceed 10 ml, and more.
Poison Centre Notifications
The update clarifies obligations for distributors, re-labellers and re-branders of chemicals. This obligation will apply from January 1, 2027.
Classification
Another innovation that will be mandatory from July 1, 2026, is the new rules and clarifications on the classification of multi-constituent substances and mixtures with properties of concern. There are also new provisions, including digital labelling, refill sales rules, advertising and distance selling.
